The Whirlwind of Our Mess – Citational Sound Frequencies

Radical Sounds Latin America is pleased to announce “The Whirlwind of Our Mess – Citational Sound Frequencies.” The diaspora remains a place for intimacies in opacity, willingly open, yet undesirable and messy to the outsider, where transmissions lose control, yet find themselves boundless to the written word. The diaspora disrupts articulated meanings, resonating in a multitude of understandings; therefore, across times and spaces, we ingest atmospheres that trace sonic strategies, sidestepping notions of purity and loss. The diaspora holds stories, energies, and histories approaching sound as a sphere of empowerment and analysis; mobilizing individuals and communities to sustain and maintain human connections.

“Messing-up mission reverberates in the kinds of queer scholarship that focus on the recognition and centering of underrecognized practices, stances, and situations that deviate from, resist, or run counter to the workings of normality. Far from romanticizing deviance and oppositionality, it intends to locate discomfort, dissonance, and disorder as necessary and grounded experiences in everyday life.” (Manalansan IV, M. F., 2014).

El desmadre, the sonic tumult, and upheaval, is a noise strike. At its heart, the sounds emanating can become -self-organized spaces of transmission-thus finding hope in this endurance and an answer to ongoing dystopia. Against all odds, our messing-up keeps unfolding gestures of care, into borderless environments.

In a way, the connections in the diaspora to citational practices are a play of sameness and difference, identity, hybridity, and alterity  (Jembere, Janine., 2020). Every citational sound is a reflection of the ever-shifting structural relationships, multiphonic connections operating, and compelling expressive manifestations of being, all enabled by sound and matter, thus further expanding, the mess, the complex non-linearity that sound conjures.

Centering on sound, diaspora, and community, archives reverberate with histories. In order to address them, it may be necessary to emerge in contested arenas where historical accounts are both challenged and expanded through acts of dissent and defiance.

Amid shifting political landscapes, this discourse program delves into the reimagining of objects, landscapes, built environments, and bodies, posing thought-provoking questions:
