Maria Chavez

Maria Chávez, born in Lima, Peru, and based in NYC, is an abstract turntablist, sound artist, and DJ. Coincidence, chance & failures are themes that unite her book objects, sound sculptures, installations & other works with her improvised performance practice. Maria authored “Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable,” which has developed a reputation as both an academic resource and a foundational text for a new generation of turntablists. She has released several albums and compositions, and stands as the sole turntablist globally to perform with the RAKE Double Needle. Her work has been featured in publications like the Wire Magazine (cover, March 2023), Art Forum’s Sound Art and E-Flux Journal, as well as earned recognition at the Guggenheim Museum. Her large-scale installations have been shown at the Getty Museum, the JUDD Foundation, Documenta 14, among other renowned institutions. Maria’s contributions extend to group exhibitions like “Don’t Blame it on ZEN: The Way of John Cage & Friends,” as well as solo showcases, including her current exhibition at the Mercy Gallery in Hartford, CT. Additionally, she is part of the Abstract Turntablism Trio alongside Victoria Shen and Mariam Rezaei and is currently on tour with duo collaborator Jordi Wheeler.
